Sound It Out – Divesting From Fossil Fuels at UNH

When it comes to combating climate change, many college student activists have been focusing their energies on the university system itself, calling for complete divestment from fossil fuels.

Many universities across the nation have pledged to or have already divested including Stanford University and the Green Mountain College, among others. But fossil fuel divestment at the University of New Hampshire may not be a vision shared by university President Mark Huddleston, who called divestment a “fairly empty, feel-good gesture” in his State of the University address given on Tuesday, February 17th.P1040711

“Personally, if I had control, that wouldn’t be the first thing I would do to combat climate change,” he said. “It strikes me as a fairly empty, feel-good gesture. You, I, everyone in this room uses fossil fuels everyday and we will for generations to come.”

Three students from the Student Environmental Action Coalition join me to talk about their campaign for divestment, why it matters and what’s at stake if it fails.

Sound It Out is written, produced and mixed by Katie McAuliffe.
